The Academy for GOD high school program begins at grade 9. By the time a student leaves high school, they should be competent with practical skills, understand themselves and how to work with others, understand the role that God and his Word have in their lives, and have a defined occupational path. In order to reach those goals, the Academy gives special attention to the creative arts, college prep and spiritual development, which all happen within the consideration of individuated tracks.
High School Distinctives
Creative Arts Emphasis
A creative arts emphasis begins heavy in the junior high level and carries through high school. The goal with creative arts is to develop in students lifelong learning and problem solving capabilities. Opportunities in art, drama, and music help students to become dynamic people that can continue to learn and work together beyond secondary school.
College Prep
We offer CLEP and SAT prep courses. These are designed for those students entering college to earn early credit for general curriculum courses. While programs typically exist outside school for these programs, we use in-school class time to help students prepare. Taking advantage of CLEP can eliminate nearly a years worth of general college credits, saving time and money.
CLEP courses that have been offered at the Academy:
American Literature
History of the US I & II
College Composition
College Mathematics
Biology
Spanish
Academy Missions
High School students at the Academy learn how to be servants. Through local and international missions, they have an opportunity to gain an understanding of God’s concern for “the least of these” (Matt. 25:45), and how they can play a part in helping. Every year we look forward to seeing students have their eyes opened to a bigger, more diverse world than they’ve seen before.
Spiritual Development
Students at the high school level receive and participate in daily and weekly biblical instruction and spiritual disciplines. The core of who we are at the Academy revolves around God’s Word and how it directs the lives of our students from a young age. While the Bible is often incorporated into each class, there are also a number of classes that specifically revolve around spiritual growth, including:
Beginnings - This class begins each day with a weekly biblical theme and verse that students explore in order to implement the Word in their daily decisions.
Bible Class
Worship Band
Chapel
Biblical Hebrew
Bible History
Individuated Track
Our independent studies program helps students focus their interest into a viable college/career route. We start with a student’s interest, then give them opportunities researching, studying, and practicing hands on in the field of interest. The goal is to give students the opportunity to explore what piques their curiosity now, so they are better prepared to make decisions entering college.
After completing a good portion of the general education requirements during the freshman and sophomore years, students can also participate in different tracks that expose them to the type of content they are most interested in learning.
Juniors & Seniors are able to make some decisions about which track to take based on their interests and their trajectory post high school.
Academic vs. Creative Tracks
Track One: Standard Track
Students who are seeking the full 22 graduation requirement credits that would follow the traditional route for high school students in public schools in the state of Tennessee.
Standardized proctoring and teaching are offered while also access to a larger range of CLEP courses to aid in a student’s ability to obtain credit for college.
Track Two: Creative Track
Students will concentrate their studies within a certain field or discipline.
Students on the creative track will also have opportunities to take some CLEP and general education courses, including study hall.
Students will have self-directed classes at times and procter-driven classes at times.
By choosing the creative track, the student will forego some of the traditional courses that would count towards the traditional graduation requirement credit scoring.
If your family is concerned with your student receiving the traditional credit scoring, then this track isn’t for your student.
Your diploma will still count as any other diploma from a TN high school since this is a private school. The issue would be in trying to transfer from the Academy to a public high school before graduating.
This track will push a students within the creative context as it will be highly project-based.
This track does require parent permission as a student and their family would have to agree to forego some of the traditional courses that would count towards the traditional graduation requirement credit scoring.
